Rock Your Own Asana!

Yoga means union. It is a balancing and integrating of your physical, mental and spiritual selves. The benefits of doing yoga are endless, but amongst them, stress relief is key.

Recently, I hosted a week long cleanse in my home, which included a group of 10 people, doing variations on a detox cleanse and practicing yoga as a group.

One of the most powerful things that I took away from this week-long journey was that I can practice yoga every single day, in my very own home.

We moved some furniture and pulled back the rug, put on some inspiring music and threw down our mats and there was our yoga studio!

Now, granted not every apartment will have large open spaces for this, but you don't really need much. Just a mat or a rug, instructions on how to properly do some of the poses, and some quiet time to do them!

There are some helpful resources on the internet that describe poses and the meaning of certain terms.
You can order videos or DVD's of your favorite instructors or find free classes online.

Here are some references that I have used in the past:

Yoga Journal

Yoga To Health (informational site)

Rodney Yee! (one of my favorites cuz he kicks my asana)

Lisa Kazmer! (my partner in crime for the cleanses in NYC)

While the ideal situation is to find a teacher you LOVE and who inspires and guides you to be at your best, you can also
rock your own asana, right at home!!

Good luck, keep it balanced.

Delicious & Healthy Fall Recipes

Greetings Dear Readers!

I am so happy today because its the perfect Fall weather. Its cool and crisp outside but the sun is shining and if you stand in just the right place it will still warm you outsid
e and in.

This is by far my favorite season for cooking. I love to bake apple pie, roast seasonal squashes and root veggies, and of course, I love juicing apples!

Today I'm going to share with you some of my favorite simple recipes for Fall. Try them at home and let me know how it goes. I hope its delicious and FUN!

Roasted Butternut Squash
Ingredients
1 butternut squash

2 cloves garlic

1/4 cup Organic Cold Pressed Olive Oil (you can use coconut oil as well)

Cinnamon to taste

Sea Salt

When I found out how simple it was to roast a squash I was blown away. You can certainly get more fancy with this recipe by cutting the squash into different size pieces or shaping them, but if your just chillin' at home and want something sweet and warm and delicious, try this:

Wash one small butternut squash and cut it in half or four.

Remove the seeds from the belly of the squash.

Place both halves (inside face up) on a baking tray.

Preheat the oven to 375 (or 400 depending on climate and your oven)

Chop 2 cloves of garlic fine and mix them into a 1/4 cup of oil. Mix well.

Drizzle or glaze the oil over the squash covering the entire exposed surface

Sprinkle cinnamon and sea salt over the squash to your desired amount
Bake in the oven for 25 minutes then check with a fork.

I like it really soft so I would probably leave my squash in another 15 minutes (40 total)
. If you like it kind of hard or raw still, you can take it out after 30 minutes. Cut it into pieces and serve! Delicious.

AGAVE APPLE PIE

Here's a healthy take on an apple pie recipe that I have been trying to perfect for a few years now. It includes the use of Agave nectar.

Agave nectar's glycemic index and glycemic load are comparable to fructose, which in turn has a much lower glycemic index and glycemic load than table sugar (sucrose).

INGREDIENTS

Place one of the whole grain pie crust in a round baking dish. Wash, peel, core and chop the apples into small chunks. In a large mixing bowl combine the apples, agave nectar, sea salt and cinnamon and stir until blended. Add the rolled oats and wheat flour to the mixture and stir until moist and blended. (you could add more apples or a dash more agave here to keep mixture moist).

Fill in pie dish and cover with the second pie crust. Poke holes in the top crust with a fork to allow it to breathe.

Bake at 350, for 25 minutes. Crust should turn golden brown. Keep your eye on it!

Enjoy! (don't be afraid to add a scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt to this dish!)

APPLE, WALNUT & ENDIVE SALAD
(got this recipe from Martha)

Serves 4

  • 1/3 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons grainy mustard
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 shallot, minced
  • 3 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • Coarse salt and ground pepper
  • 2 red apples, quartered, cored, and each quarter cut into 8 wedges
  • 3 ounces baby arugula, washed and dried (6 cups)
  • 1 Belgian endive, leaves separated, washed and dried
  • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, coarsely chopped
  • 2 ounces soft goat cheese, crumbled
  1. In a small skillet over medium heat, toast walnuts, stirring frequently until crisp and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the mustard, honey, shallot, and vinegar until well combined. Whisk in the oil until thick; season with salt and pepper.
  3. Add apple and arugula; toss to coat. Arrange endive leaves on four serving plates, top with apple mixture and scatter mint, cheese, and walnuts over the top.

What are you cleansing?

It's late Summer and it's a natural instinct to want to hang on to the last juicy days of fun and sun as long as possible. In keeping with a healthy balance of reality though, it's important to realize what is about to happen in nature and find where it is reflected in your own life. We are preparing for a natural cleanse. The Earth is pushing up and out its bounty of Fall vegetables and greens, the markets are bustling with robust, ripe produce that is vibrant in color,

and the leaves on all the trees are still sparkling green, but in a few short weeks we will begin to see the first signs of the turn of season: preparing for Fall.

At this time of year we can observe what kind of rewards we reaped from the seeds we sewed last Spring. We can give thanks for the many gifts of nature that we are able to enjoy, and we can also forgive ourselves for having lost a seed or two along the way. All the more ready to replant again next year.

Soon, we will become part of a natural letting go. It may not be time yet, but when it is.... What are you saying goodbye to in your life? What are you letting go of?

What are you cleansing?

Traditional cleansing of the body can be an incredibly powerful way to create ritual around the practice of letting go. We learn to say goodbye to those things which no longer serve us and we recognize and give thanks for the many things we learned that did strengthen and support us along our path to a happier, healthier existence. While cleansing, your body is afforded the opportunity to take a break from the tedious task of digesting and processing solid food day in and day out. Your liver, gallbladder, kidneys and stomach may all thank you for a few days off, and your colon gets a good clean out.

Whether its pesticides or trans fats in your food, car exhaust fumes in the air or chemicals in the soda you drink, your body is being assailed by pollutants 24 hours a day. You can use a cleansing diet and detox plan to redress the balance and restore your body to health! It's an important opportunity to check in with what foods work well in your diet and which do not serve you.

It's a gentle stepping back from routine to observe which habits and patterns work for you and which ones don't.

I am thrilled to be co-leading a Fall group cleanse and gentle detoxifying yoga week with my good friend and colleague, Lisa Kazmer. We will be running a planning day, to prepare for the week of cleansing and meeting several times throughout the process to practice yoga as a group and check in with eachother about our individual process.

Please visit the cleanse page on this blog for more information about embarking on a cleanse or to schedule a private consultation. You contact me directly at deborah@green-pirate.com.

In Harmony with Nature.

I am always amazed at how quickly I can get caught up in the hectic energy of the city. Even as the owner of my own business, I find that I am subject to the pace and madness of other people's agendas and often find myself caught in the very same stressful patterns that I offer counseling for. I struggle with keeping a finger on the pulse of what's happening in the moment, right now, and can become consumed with fear of what's to come, worries about money, opportunities, the economy, etc. I find myself daydreaming about the simple life, and living in a place where there are tons of trees and fresh water.

I was raised in upstate NY, near the foothills of the Adirondack mountains. As often as I can, I like to visit, recharge my batteries and reconnect with nature. This past week I spent a few days camping at a beautiful place called Fawn Lake with the intention of clearing away my stress, reclaiming my love and respect for nature and humbly receiving the lessons which the Earth has to offer me.

Fawn Lake is a gift to me. I started camping there when I was a teenager, with my close friends from the Adirondacks. While I was there I lived silently and simply. My best friend Sheila and I built fires made of fallen wood that we gathered from nearby treefalls, and cooked fresh veggies that we were given by local farmers over an open fire, roasting them right in the hot coals. We swam and bathed in the lake and we sat quietly for hours, just listening to the wind caress the trees, the call of the many loons that grace that area and the lapping of the endless waves off the lake upon the shore.

It was the sound of true harmony.

Breathing in fresh air and relaxing my mind from the stress of city living was blissful. I know that this close relationship with nature granted me the feeling of balance and fulfillment that I was reveling in. I vowed to keep this feeling alive inside me and to find a way every day to witness nature, to connect with the Earth and all her many lessons.

When I thought of ways to do this, many questions came up.

Am I living in balance with nature? Do I do my part to contribute to preserving this beauty and natural wonder for the next generation? Or do I make excuses and take the easy way out when I can? Do I recycle and compost everything I can? Do I volunteer for a local community cleaning day? Do I avoid making garbage and waste when I can? Or do I just think "Well, let somebody else deal with it..."?

I will be planning a full week-long cleanse in September 2010 where we will focus on this topic. Connecting with nature. Reviewing our vows to our own balance and that of the Earth. Removing the stressful burdens of waste in our lives, and striking a true connected relationship with the one thing that continues to feed us all: NATURE.

Please take time for yourself in these last few days of Summer to indulge in the beauty of our natural surroundings. Get to Central Park. Take the train out to one of our beaches and swim in the majestic Ocean. Visit the Cloisters. Get yourself close to nature and just observe. There is so much harmony to be shared.

Peace,
Deborah

What's Sexy About Health?

Let's face it, feeling happy and healthy is sexy!

Being in touch with that part of yourself that is sensual (which by very nature of being human we all have) is crucial to feeling balanced. Many people live in denial of what role their sensuality plays in their lives and it can lead to choices that don't always serve us. Getting to you know your sensual side and to nourish it can be truly revolutionary and healing!

I've been doing Zumba. I know... funny.... Here's the funniest part, my mother gave me the DVD and basically challenged me. She said "I know that you love to dance and you can do all these moves with your hips, and that's the exact area you need to work on!" Now I know that she meant well when she said that last part, hahaha. But the truth is, I LOVE to dance. I especially love Latin style dances; salsa, samba, merengue and even zouk!

I love it because it makes me feel energized and sexy. The fact that it also helps keep me in shape is a major bonus. I get a good cardiovascular workout and I get to connect to that rhythmic part of me that loves to step in time to the music. It stimulates a flow of energy that makes me feel amazing.

So what's your healthy sexy?

Do sensuality and sexuality have an impact on your overall balanced health? Absolutely! In fact, its just as important as good nutrition, exercise, a career that you love and a connection to your spirituality or creativity.

It's important to know the following things:

- how to care for and nurture your sensual side
- how to support reproductive systems and organs
- how to tap into and fuel your creative passions
- how to learn to love yourself as a sensual being
- what it means to YOU to be a sensual/sexual person (which is different for us all)
- how to communicate to the world about these things

As Cindy and I prepare for our upcoming class on health and sensuality (see details below), we continually ask ourselves and others what is so important about having a healthy relationship to our sexuality and sensuality. The answer is that it is at the core of everything that we do. It is our center of self-identity in so many ways. It fuels our passions and ignites our daily experiences with a spark.

Join us on a journey to better know ourselves, so we may be happier, healthier, and yes, sexier!!

Intention for the week

“The physical world, including our bodies, is a response of the observer. We create our bodies as we create the experience of our world.” - Deepak Chopra, author and spiritual philospher

Setting intentions is an opportunity for aligning ourselves with the universe.

When we create mental images of what our goals look like and create calm space to breathe and fuel this image, we are much more likely to reach this goal.

What's your personal intention for this week?

Have you been meaning to call that old friend that you love but its just been sooo long....?

What about picking up that instrument that you wish you played and just spending a half hour with it, or finally signing up for that dance class that's calling your feet to come hit the floor?

Are you in need of some exercise and would really love to make time for the long bike ride that you have been thinking about?

Whatever your personal goals are, take a moment this morning to set an intention. Try this:

1. Find a quiet place where you can sit for 10 minutes.

2. Clear your mind of other thoughts and distractions.
To do this try focusing only on your inhale and exhale for a few breaths.

3. Set your intention. Say to yourself " This week I am going to apply for a new job." Or, "This week I am going to try to exercise for 30 minutes every day." Or how about, "This week I am going to be kinder and gentler with myself."

4. Picture what it looks like.
Imagine yourself actually doing that thing that you intend. If you are intending to apply for a new job, maybe in your vision you are updating your resume and handing it to a potential employer who is smiling at you. If you are intending to be kinder and gentler, perhaps in your vision you would be taking a bubble bath or a gentle yoga class. Perhaps you are just taking a night to yourself to read.

5. Get clear! Whatever your intention or you vision, be really specific. See all the little details that go along with this vision. See the colors, the textures, even imagine the smells. Create the clarity of this intention within your own mind so that it can manifest in your life.

6. Breathe. Once you have a clear vision or symbol of your intention, just breathe into it. Take slow and deep breaths, and imagine that every breath is fueling that intention with power.

7. Smile. You've done it. Now its out there and you can go about having a beautiful week, knowing that the universe has been sent a powerful message about what you want.

I practice this method of creating intention for myself on a pretty regular basis and I have to say that it has changed my life. I refer you to Deepak Chopra's newest book "The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire" as a reference to the science behind meditation and intention. He does a wonderful job of explaining how the quantum physics of this type of communication works.

I wish you all the most abundant week and I hope you find time to manifest all of your intentions!

with blessings,
Deborah

Dear America.... the beet.

... so this is what a beet looks like.

They are a root vegetable, typically red or purplish in color, with long green stems and a tail like a rat. Not to be confused with a radish, which is much smaller in size.

The beet became highly commercially important in 19th century Europe following the development of the sugar beet in Germany and the discovery that sucrose could be extracted from them, providing an alternative to tropical sugar cane. It remains a widely cultivated commercial crop for producing table sugar.

The leaves and stems of young plants are steamed briefly and eaten as a vegetable. A large proportion of the commercial production is processed into boiled and sterilised beets or into pickles. In Eastern Europe beet soup, such as cold borsch, is a popular dish. Yellow-coloured garden beets are grown on a very small scale for home consumption.

Beetroot can be peeled, steamed, and then eaten warm with butter as a delicacy; cooked, pickled, and then eaten cold as a condiment; or peeled, shredded raw, and then eaten as a salad. Pickled beets are a traditional food of the American South.

One increasingly popular preparation involves tossing peeled and diced beets with a small amount of oil and seasoning, then roasting in the oven until tender.

A traditional Pennsylvania Dutch dish is Red Beet Eggs. Hard-boiled eggs are refrigerated in the liquid left over from pickling beets and allowed to marinate until the eggs turn a deep pink-red color.

Betanins, obtained from the roots, are used industrially as red food colourants, e.g. to intensify the colour of tomato paste, sauces, desserts, jams and jellies, ice cream, sweets and breakfast cereals.

Beetroot can also be used to make wine.[4]

The consumption of beets causes pink urine in some people.

Why, you ask, am I blogging about a beet?

Well, I'll tell you. I am blogging about beets and the history and use of such a food, because last weekend while I was working on the Juice Truck at the Nike Cup Soccer Tournament at the Met Oval, I had one parent after the next approach me looking for smoothies. When they found out I didn't have smoothies, I had juice, the next questions were along the lines of...

"Well, what kind of juice ya got?".... "What's Kale?" (which I can understand)....

"What's a beet?".... which just makes me sad. "Really?", I thought. "You don't know what beets are? You don't recognize this red bulbous root? Really?"... but it was true. Many of these folks were totally unfamiliar with beets and they certainly weren't about to order our famous Hot Pink Limeade (which features The Beet). Granted I was in old-school Queens, but still...

So here it is. The beet. In all its Glory. I highly reccomend reading Tom Robbins' book Jitterbug Perfume for a more intellectual take on the historical role of the beet in time travel, chaos, and tantalizing smells...

Oh, and while I'm at it, here America.... is KALE!!!

and this is what a smoothie looks like.....

and here is a picture of just plain old, extracted JUICE. also smooth, but not made by blending with milk or ice cream or yogurt, just extracted from the fresh fruits and veggies, using a juice extractor. simple. delicious.

I have nothing more to say about it except that I am concerned for us all and I am grateful for Jamie Oliver.

Healing from Grief & Loss- Workshop Thursday 7 - 9

Healing From Grief & Loss by Deborah Smith

When we feel stressed out, we tend to fall back into some of our more comforting habits or patterns (such as reaching for that bowl of ice cream or grabbing fast foods) , and we might slack off a bit on the healthier behaviors that we have been trying to keep on track with (such as regular daily exercise and cooking at home). Those things that feel difficult to us (which may require a bit extra will-power) get pushed to the side and we justify the easier options based on the fact that we had a hard day, or we have no time.

I often wonder, why do we "reward" ourselves with things that are not good for us? Often those things we consider a reward, or that we "earned", are things that will leave us feeling worse after we have had them.

Everybody is busy, and we have our daily struggles just to keep our bodies, minds and spirits in balance. But what happens when you add a major life trauma to that experience? What happens to your life's balance when your spouse becomes ill? What happens when the woman or man that you have lived with for 10 years has an affair and you decide to split? What happens when suddenly your job downsizes and you get laid off?

This is a time when your body can go into shock and begin to function quite differently. Your priorities shift and typically healthy habits are the last thing on the list. Getting proper nutrition during times of grief, or extreme stress, is one of the most important things you can do.

On, November 15th, 2010, my father Bill Smith passed away. He had been struggling with lung cancer for almost 2 years and it was a very difficult and sad time for my family. He was only 68 and it felt like he was taken from us too soon. Before then, I had never known the grief of loss at this level. I had never experienced this depth of sadness or confusion and I can remember clearly that there were weeks that I felt simply lost, and did not want to get out of bed.

My family made all kinds of adjustments to incorporate this experience into our lives. We put our jobs on hold, we canceled all plans for months at a time, my sister and I traveled back and forth from Boston and New York to be at home, and my mother completely dedicated all of her time to helping him with whatever he might need. She spent a year with doctors and treatments and hospitals and therapies, trying to breathe hope back into everyone's life. In the meantime, she put her own needs completely on hold and selflessly cared for him.

When I look back now, there are so many things that we could have done differently. I would have made absolutely sure that my mother, my sister and I were getting solid nutrition. I could not see it at the time, but we were exhausted, drained and totally empty from stress and crying. Our adrenal glands were zapped. Instead of eating fresh greens and getting minerals and nutrients into our systems, we were drinking coffee in the morning and gin and tonics at night. We were seeking relief but we were further depleting ourselves.

I would have demanded that the entire family get out once a day and take a walk to calm our minds and move our bodies. We were full of pent up anxiety and our minds were bent trying to figure out how long my father would be with us and what else we could still do to make him feel better. We needed to relax a bit and work out some of our frustrations.

I would have made more time for laughter. While lung cancer is one of the uncurable cancers and even the thought of somebody having it feels like a death sentance, the fact remains that my father was still with us until the end. I think that the fear we all felt made it difficult in times to just enjoy each other's company and smile and laugh.

Yet, you cannot change the past and all I can do now is incorporate this information into my future. I can learn to support my body in times of extreme stress with healthy foods. I can maintain an exercise regimen that will always help me to keep a feeling of balance in my body and I can focus on the bright side of the day, seeking moments of lightness and laughter to replace the heaviness of the changes that are inevitable in life.

I'm co-teaching a class at the Meta Center on Thursday night with Cindy Neder-Highfield as part of our Women's Holistic Nourishment Series. The subject is Healing From Grief & Loss, and how nutrition can support us through the incomparable weight of depression. We will take a look at how stress works chemically in the body and what small everyday things we can do to keep our lives on track when dealing with the loss of a loved one, or a job, or perhaps just going through a rough break-up that is life-changing.

I hope you will join us for this 2 hour workshop, which will be fun and full of great content
and tools for you to take home to incorporate into your own life. This class can also be helpful for women who are dealing with highly stressful job scenarios or who have children and are not yet back on track with taking care of their own bodies and minds.

If you have any questions or want to learn more about the workshop, visit us at Majestic Living.

Until then, I wish you healthy and happy blessings. Remember there is a choice in every moment.

Food and Stress

I have been teaching corporate workshops called Integrated Health and Wellness with Cindy Neder from Majestic Living. What we discovered by going into people's jobs to bring health information to them was that so many health related conversations in the workplace are about stress. People are up against intense deadlines, they are tired from overworking themselves, they don't have the time to get proper nutrition and as a result, they reach for quick fix fuels such as coffee, sugary snacks, protein bars and soft drinks to help keep them going through their busy day. I decided to do some in depth research about how stress directly affects the body and mind and ultimately our health. For now, I am attaching a link to an article called Food and Stress published on Wholeliving.com that talks about this. If you are a busy working professional, you may want to take the time to read this article and discover if stress is having an impact on your food choices.

Enjoy! More to come!

Cooking Healthy for One

Some days I just want to swing by the health food store and pick a package of that India space food that you just plop in boiling water and its ready to eat in 3 minutes, like some gushy curry lentils or creamy spinach. Yeah.... but today I realized it was time for me to practice the art of cooking for one. I am horrible at this. I love to cook gigantic spreads that can feed 20 people or a plated gourmet 3 course sit down orgasmic organic delicious meal for 4! But when it's just me eating.... I tend to drop the ball, reach for those already cooked easy to prepare foods or just snack on fruit throughout the day. Today I wanted a meal that would be fantastic and delicious and healthy just for me! So with Indian space food in mind I foraged through my own kitchen for all the ingredients it would take to reach nirvana and 20 minutes later I was smiling widely.

Let's call it Spinach Curry Quinoa with Chickpeas
(not so fancy). Ok how about Vegetarian Bliss! I have to admit I impressed even myself. The recipe was simple:

16 oz can chickpeas
3/4 cup quinoa
1/2 golden delicious apple
handful organic spinach
1 small onion (peeled and chopped)
3 cloves of garlic (peeled & chopped)
2 Tbs Yellow Curry
1 tsp organic olive oil
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp sea salt
dash cayenne pepper

Directions:

Saute the onion and garlic in the olive oil over a low heat to caramelize the onion. After 2 or 3 minutes add entire can of chickpeas (including the liquid). Stir in the curry, turmeric, sea salt and cayenne pepper and allow all ingredients to simmer and soften the chickpeas.

Combine quinoa with 1 1/2 cups of filtered water and bring to a boil. Then reduce to low heat and cover with tight lid. Let it cook 12 minutes or until all the water has evaporated and grains are fully cooked.

Wash and dry handful of spinach and shred it into smaller bite size pieces. Slice half the apple into small cubes. Combine apple and spinach and then cover with two heaping tablespoons of the quinoa and fill the bowl with the curry chickpeas. Stir it all up together and let it cool a bit before savoring every bite!

Enjoy! I sat quietly and read a chapter from my favorite book, Jitterbug Perfume, by Tom Robbins. If you have never read it, its a juicy cosmic adventure to eternity and beyond, try it.

Women Need to Feel Safe to Be Wild

I use “womb” as a verb: to create and cultivate safety and healing in your body & in your life; to empower women to nurture, protect themselves and each other.

I realized that women need to womb to be wild. In order for us to let go and express with wild abandon we have to first feel safe. We have not felt safe or protected. Every day in our communities and around the world women are raped beaten, enslaved, & mutilated. Without safety wildness becomes distorted; wildly out of control, disconnected, ungrounded.

The wild I’m talking about is the wildness you see in a lush plant that’s been nurtured & protected, that sinks down deep roots, and has room, feels safe to grow tall and take up room. A garden grows because it is nurtured, rooted, & protected. In the same way we need to feel nurtured, protected, rooted, and safe. We need to feel safe to unfold to our true potential and be wild.

Here at Be Wild Woman, finding love starts with loving and nurturing yourself. Be Wild Woman provides the tools & support for you to reclaim your body & love feeling sexy! Learning how to reclaim my body helped me move from feeling anxious, depressed, ashamed & uncomfortable with my body to feeling innocent, self confident, empowered, sexy & free to express myself. I know it can help you too!”

Happy Day, Earth!

Happy Earth Day, earth! Umm...well. We're trying, right?

Big round of applause to all those folks out there who are working very hard to give Earth Day a face-lift. It's long overdue and I'm grateful for social networking as a catalyst for this change. I can remember when Earth Day was me and a bunch of young wanna-be hippie kids in our tie-dye tees and Burkenstocks, strummin' acoustic guitars and being pissed off that nobody came to our event, because nobody cared about Earth. Nowadays, Earth day marketing is slick, there are events happening globally and it's far more accessible to people of all walks of life.

But there's still a long way to go before the Earth and its inhabitants are in a state of balance. As we can see all around us, there are warning signs of the consequences of all our actions coming to a head; global warming (which by the way folks is probably REAL), natural disasters, new found disease that seem to result from chemical toxins in our air and water.... Luckily, more so now then ever, there is great information out there about what we can do each day to be a part of the solution. I think we should give a shit. I think we should care about what our kids will inherit.

Bottom line is, if you are a person who cares even just a little bit about the future of the planet, then it's actually IMPERITIVE that you make changes. And if you are not, well, you got your own thing going on and please just stay out of our way.

As we know, you gotta be the change you wish to see, so here are some ideas and thoughts for energy conservation and reducing your personal carbon footprint:

Start a Home Compost
You don't have to be a farmer to compost. You can just start one in your freezer at home by saving all the scraps of organic waste-matter that you create instead of throwing them in the garbage. Keep them in a small bucket or bin, a used orange juice carton, or even an old plastic bag from grocery shopping. Check with your local farmers market or grocer about who collects compost and find out where you can drop it off. In New York, there are composts set up at many major outdoor farmers markets and in some of the smaller community gardens and parks. Farmers are thrilled to receive donations of compostable material because its great for your soil. You can include all remains of fruits and vegetables, grains, coffee grounds, and even egg shells! DO IT TODAY!!! Feel free to email me with questions.

Ride A Bike!
If you don't already love riding a bike, then I promise you as soon as you get back on one and start rollin', you will love it again and the joy of cruisin' will come back with a new found purpose as you realize that not only do you feel more free as the wind whips through your hair, but Hey! you're saving money and reducine the amount of fuel-based toxins in the air. Get back on it buddy. Just DO IT. You will be so happy.

Unplug Appliances and Turn Off Lights
This is good for the environment AND your electric bill. It's so simple. Just make sure that unplug any appliances or lamps or stereos when they are not in use. Electricity seeps in very small amounts through the contact of the metals (even when your swithces are off). So you are wasting electrical energy, and wasting money. It's small but it's also big, you know.

Take the Plastic Challenge!
See how much plastic you use in one week and then make an effort to reduce it by half!
This is fun for the whole family. I bet you have no idea how much garbage or plastic waste you and your housemates or family create and if you did realize, you'd be embarrased.

So, here's what you do. For one straight week, just live normally, but bring home any plastic containers that you purchase and use both in and outside the house (eg: you had a salad at Whole Foods that came in a plastic carrier or you bought a 16oz soda and drank it on the bus).

Create a recycle bag that you fill with your weeks plastic usage so you can see it all pile up.
Make a note of how much you used and recycle it. The following week, see if you can cut that amount in half. The week after that, see if you can cut THAT amount in half, so now your down to 1/4 the original amount, and so on... If you're the competetive type, make it into a household challenge and set a reward for the person who makes the least waste for the week. This is a great way to SHOW your children the impact of their actions as well.

Remember things like stainless steel containers for water and bringing your own lunch from home in your reusable tupperwear.

That's all for now. Happy Day mama Earth!

Health & Sensuality

Greetings! I'm so excited to be hosting my first teleclass this evening with Cindy Neder-Highfield of Majestic Living. If you haven't already checked out the info on my "classes" page, please do so and join us tonight for the FREE teleclass.

Our topic is going to be health and sensuality. When we reached out to female friends and peers to find out what kind of information they were really craving, it was true across the board that women want to have a conversation about how sexuality and sensuality play a role in their health. In addition, they felt starved of a safe and authentic conversation about the health of their reproductive organs and how thier sensuality plays a role in their daily happiness.

As a holistic health practitioner and life coach, I have many conversations about this with my clients, but when I think back to times in my life where I have felt a safe platform for this conversation, I realized they were few and far between. I would like to change that, both for myself and for all women. Let's talk about sex? YES!, and the grounded and healthy way to treat yourself, your body, mind and soul in relation to this topic.

What are some foods that support the health of your reproductive organs?

What are some ways that you can let go of negative self image that is holding you back from feeling your best in your body where it's at right now??

Call in tonight and find out!
Visit Majestic Living's website to register for tonight's event and get the call in number!

I hope to hear you all there!

Letting Go- Mind, Body & Soul

Lighten up! Balanced holistic health has everything to do with being in the present moment and knowing what your body is communicating to you right now.

So often we get caught up in the emotional energy of the past and we aren't available to support ourselves in getting our current needs met. We know what it is that we wish to gain or create in our lives; but do we know what we need to let go of in order to make room for all the new?

Here are some ideas for letting go of the old and clearing space for manifesting your heart's desires. Have fun with it, it's Spring after all! Cleaning is practically mandatory.

Mind
- tackle your clutter for a few hours a week
(old books, DVD's, paperwork, unused or too-tight clothes all go!)
- take 5 minutes each morning to breath and meditate
- create some space from heavy or negative relationships

Body

- clean out the fridge of old and funky foods
- check exp. dates on spices and dry goods and toss oldies
- walk/run 15 minutes a day to shed layers of winter padding
- cleanse your digestive system by adding fresh squeezed juices

Soul
- donate old things to a
local charity or organization
- get rid of behavior patterns that cause guilt
(guilt holds you to the past and never allows you to be in the present)
- laugh for 15 minutes each day (letting go of everything!)

Make a list of all the things you can think of that you want to let go of and then get to it. I promise you will feel lighter and much more ready to invite abundance into your life! Then let me know how it goes....I'm working on it too!

Classes and Private Sessions!

Yeah!! I just added two new pages to this blog: Classes, where you can learn about upcoming Holistic Health Classes and Private Sessions, where you can learn more about working with me as a private health coach.

Could a conversation about your diet or stress levels help set you back on track? Could you use some support around setting and attaining personal goals or do you just need a good therapeutic massage??

Everyone needs support in addressing their overall health and that's what I love to do! Check out my pages and links to my personal coaching website and contact me with any questions or to schedule a session.

I added Gift Certificates too! So now you can buy that special gift for somebody you love and know they will get something they can really use!

It's A Family Affair

Family Juicing
I've been thinking about the tone that I want to create for my blog posts. What is most important for me when I read a blog or follow a writer: their voice. So, my intention for this blog is to allow my personal voice to come through, while continuing to create fun, inspirational and educational content that makes people want to live a healthier, juicier life!

With that said, I had a great time this weekend celebrating Easter with my sister and her family. We cooked a gorgeous brunch, which consisted of fresh strawberries and grapefruit slices, greek yogurt and raw honey, as well as scrambled eggs and chicken apple sausages. My favorite part, of course, was that we got out their Breville juicer and made a giant pitcher of fresh squeezed juice.

We added all the following: - beets - lemon - red apples - celery - carrots - beet greens - cucumbers - green apple It was a sexy bright pink color (much like the Hot Pink Limeade on the Green Pirate Juice Truck!) and it tasted divine!

My adorable niece and nephew (Margaux and Will) loved it and never once complained that it wasn't the juice that comes in their juicebox or that it was a funny color.
Will (age 1 1/2) even asked his daddy to lift him up so he could watch the fascinating process of all the big chunky vegetables and fruits going in and only juice coming out! Done. Simply delicious, good for the whole family, and FUN.

Now, get out your juicer or your wok or steamer, crank up the tunes in the kitchen, and invite your entire family (or housemates or roommates or neighbors!) to participate in creating something delicious for your next meal.

Power of Intention Exercise

What's your personal intention for this weekend?
What's one thing you intend to do to improve your relationship with your self? with nature? with the food you eat? with your relatives or loved ones?
Where do you see yourself thriving in life?

I offer you a little assignment for the weekend...

You may not realize how valuable it is to begin every action with a clear intention.
Philosophers, scientists and spiritual leaders alike have been studying the impact of positive or negative thinking on the outcome of any given situation for years. What we
have learned is that overwhelming proof supports the idea that our intentions
directly effect the outcome of our actions.

We can create so much for ourselves through the power of intention. Much like prayer or meditation helps to calm the mind, allowing for greater mental clarity and a feeling of inner peace, setting a clear intention can help to better guide you on your path to achieving your goals.

Try this: (it will only take 10 minutes!!!)

Choose one personal goal for which you would like to set an intention.
(ex. I want to make a really healthy dinner. I want to have a better relationship with my mother. I want to make $50,000 this year. I want to travel to India.)

- Sit quietly in a comfortable position.
- Float your eyes closed and begin to focus on your breath.
- Take 3 deep inhales and exhales.
- Now clarify your intention to a single goal: travel to India.
- Begin to create an image in your minds eye of what that would look like.
- Create a symbol for your intention (ie: a statue of Ganesha!)
- See all the details of that symbol and breathe deeply in your relaxed state.
- Smile knowing that the symbol for your intention exists!
- Continue to breath quietly for a few minutes focusing on the symbol.
- When you're ready, float your eyes open again.

There you have it. You just carved a serious path towards acheiving your goal
and you got to relax and relieve stress in your body at the same time.

Have fun with this practice. Setting intention can be a powerful way to infuse meditation into your every day and get closer to living the life you desire.

Enjoy!

Tantra meets Holistic Nutrition Tonight!

Greetings All and Happy Spring Day!

I'm thrilled about this day for so many reasons, not
the least of which is that I am co-teaching a Holistic
Nourishment Workshop for Women this evening with my
dear friend and magnificent tantra life coach, Cindy
Neder-Highfield. Cindy and I have been meeting several
times a week for a few months now to wrap our heads
around the best possible content that we could provide
for women surrounding nourishment, holistic approaches
to health, mind-body-spirit balance and juicy living.

Tonight we present the second event in our Holistic
Nourishment Series entitled: Health Sexy Powerful YOU!

Our goal is to support women in living their lives to
fullest and relishing in every delicious juicy moment.

We've discovered that the holistic nutrition approach to
creating a well balanced and healthy lifestyle goes hand
in hand with a tantric philosophy on life and we're ready to
show you how and why!

Below is a note from Cindy and links to her Majestic Living
website. Join us tonight for a wonderful evening of holistic
healing and nurturing or get on the mailing list for future
events!

Live Juicy!
Deborah

A Juicy Living Note from Tantra Life Coach
Cindy Neder-Highfield

Are you living your life to the fullest?
Are you doing your part, each and every day,

to take big juicy bites out of this delicious
cherry-pie life?

I want to know: if you're not- what is keeping
you from reveling in your magnificence?

Tantra reminds us that we have the opportunity
to turn over a new leaf each day. To become different people-
people we're proud of.
:)

Adopting this new philosophy on life isn't hard, though it does take some persistence. By clearing your mental decks, you will change how you think, thereby changing how you feel. When you feel differently, a new world of possibilities suddenly open up to you! It is my hope that every day you are living in your joy and pleasure, and that when you lay your head down on your pillow at night you know, beyond a doubt, that you've lived your day to it's maximum potential.

Until next time,
Cindy
